  “James…”

Walking over to a well stocked bar, she grabbed a bottle of red wine, and poured a glass. Couple glasses later, an intoxicated Jasmine reclined on the sofa. Rays from the sun peaked through the blinds. Rubbing her eyes, she awoke with a pounding headache. Jasmine slowly got off the sofa. She poured a glass of water, and popped a pill in her mouth. She was beginning to feel nauseated. Walking from the kitchen holding her stomach she called for James throughout the house. There was no answer.

Stripping off her clothing, she headed for the shower. Half an hour later, she sat in the backyard on the lawn chair reading, while drinking orange juice. It wasn’t long before a cab pulled up to the driveway. She didn’t bother looking. She knew it was James. Jasmine watched him from behind her shades. He strolled up the driveway, realized she was in the back, and headed toward her. She said nothing and continued reading. He kissed her on the cheek.

“Instead of giving me a kiss, what you need to do is explain where the hell you been for the last twenty four hours motherfucker.”

She smacked him right across the cheek. A look of shock creased his face. He rubbed his cheek.

“I am sorry about last night,” he paused, looking at her. “The guys took me out for a drink, and I guess I had a little bit too much. And I don’t know how I wound up on Bill’s sofa but I did. I should’ve called, but the alcohol clouded my judgment.”

He tried kissing the center of her chest, and was getting ready to fondle her nipples with his tongue. Without a warning, Jasmine smacked him again.

“Don’t you dare put that dirty tongue on me!”

“Bitch!” he held his face as he stared at her.

“Please reserve that word for the whore you were screwing last night,” she said removing her shades.

  “You fucking crazy!” he shouted.

“I will show you crazy,” she yelled, getting up off the lawn chair and throwing the wine glass at him. It smashed against the pavement.

“You lucky you is a woman. Or else I would have beat the shit out of you!” He warned in a Caribbean accent.

“Try it asshole, I will send you to jail faster than you came here.”

She followed behind him. They both headed in the house. Jasmine watched him packing his clothing. Without warning she jumped on his back and began pounding at him.

  “You ungrateful bastard!” she yelled.

James threw her onto the bed.

“Stop it!” he grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her.

Jasmine’s strength began to weaken as nausea took over. She began throwing up all over the bed.

  “Are you okay?” James asked.

“I’m fine,” she answered and headed to the master bathroom, slamming the door behind her. James pressed the stop button on the tape recorder and headed out the door.

  A Week Later

Jasmine sat nervously in the doctor’s office, awaiting the test result. Dr. Albert entered the room carrying a chart. She looked at him for answers.

“I have good news the doctor told her.” He looked at the paper and replied, “You’re pregnant.”

Jasmine was in disbelief and did not know how to react. She wasn’t sure if she should call James and tell him the news.

  “And you’re pregnant with twins.”

Her eyes opened wide. Now she was extremely shocked. A million and one thoughts crept across Jasmine’s mind as she contemplated what to do. Her marriage was on the rocks, James walked out. Now it seemed like she was going to be a single mother. This was not the life she envisioned, especially with kids involved. Picking up the phone, she slowly dialed James’ number.

  “Hello,” his husky voice answered.

“I am pregnant and I am pregnant with twins,” she replied.

  “Is it mines?”

“Man…you know what!” she abruptly hung up the phone.

  Some Months Later

The sound of babies crying echoed in the room as Jay sat beside Jasmine. He cuddled one of the babies, while she cuddled the other. Their relationship wasn’t what it was before, but it had improved slightly. Jasmine was determined to work out her marriage and keep her family together. Then the twins first birthday ruined everything. It changed their lives forever.

  “Hello,” Jasmine answered.

It was three in the morning, and she wondered who would disturb her sleep especially when she would have a busy day planning the twin’s birthday.

  “Hi, is Jay there?”

Jasmine sat up, she had to be sure that she wasn’t dreaming. Three in the morning and James was sound asleep. To make sure she wasn’t hearing things, she spoke once more.

  “Hello!”

“Are you deaf?’ The voice asked in an agitated tone. “Is Jay there? I’m in labor.”

The accent was of someone with Caribbean descent, the voice was somewhat familiar.

“Excuse me...? I am James’ wife. Anything you need to say comes through me.”

“Tell your husband his son is about to be born and he needs to get down here. He knows where to find me.”

The phone went dead on the other line.

  “Wake up!”

Jasmine shook Jay aggressively. She didn’t want to create a scene and wake the twins.

  “Huh!” Jay groggily replied.

“Jay, get your ass up,” she said leaning in closer and hitting him.

  “What!” he answered irritated.

“One of your bitches called saying she is pregnant.”

Jay looked at her, hissed his teeth fluffed his pillow, then he said, “Whatever, you are delusional and going through postpartum depression.”

Then it dawned on her to check the caller ID. The caller listed was Jhonelle Henry. Jasmine rubbed her eyes once more, to make sure she was seeing right. Jhonelle was supposed to be Jay’s cousin. What the hell, this made no sense. Her head spun, her stomach turned. The thought of James committing adultery and incest in her home was sickening.

Jasmine got out off bed, went to the mini bar and came to the bedroom with a wine bottle.

“You disgusting pig!” The wine bottle connected with his head. “Get the fuck out my house!”

James reached out to hit her, but thought against it.

“Your dick gonna fall off you sick bastard!” She yelled.

The sound of a crying baby interrupted their loud, heated argument.

“Consider yourself lucky,” he responded, putting on his clothing. “At least it’s not in your pussy.”

  “Get out !”

The crystal dish at the side table flew past his head.

  The Following Day

“Jasmine...?” one of the two men said, walking into her office.

  “Yes,” she replied.

  “You are under arrest.”

  “For what?” she asked resisting.

  “Assault…”

“You have it all wrong. I’m calling my lawyer!”

The officer wouldn’t allow her. Instead they threw her on the table and place her in handcuffs. The commotion brought everyone running from their desks. Friends, foes and fakers, they all had to see what was going on. Some whispered amongst each other. Others snickered while some looked on in shock.

“Get Laura on the phone,” Jasmine said to her secretary.

  “Yes, Ms. James.”

The secretary wasted no time putting her fingers to work.

After being released from jail, Jasmine fell into a deep depression. Quickly, drinking became a major part of her life. At times she would pass out on the sofa. It wasn’t long before the babies were removed from her care. Jasmine not only wound up in criminal court from James’ charges of assault, but in the family court as well.

  Five Years Later

Jasmine chuckled, as she drove her Benz through the streets of White Plains New York.

“Make sure my check is not late,” she mimicked Jay.

Jasmine vowed he would never get away. She wondered who she was fooling, he already did.
Not only was he disrespectful, but he brought embarrassment to her job. He had used her to obtain his green card, and lied that Jhonelle was his cousin.

All along, she was nothing more than his long time girlfriend and they both wanted to live in America. Jasmine heard stories about women marrying men from the Caribbean for green cards, never in a million years she thought she would be caught up in the scam. She laughed and cried at the same time because she lost the battle, Jay had won.

Months went by, and Jasmine complied with terms of the court. She visited with the twins, Mia and Tia on a regular basis. She brought toys and played with them. With each visit, things were not easy on her emotions. Jasmine and the girls would cry when the visit was over.

It was a hectic Friday afternoon, and Jasmine was headed to her supervised visit. Her phone rung, it was the caseworker calling to tell her that her husband didn’t show and she was not sure what was going on. Jasmine hung up the phone and called Jay.

“You bastard, you think you’re going to keep my kids from me? I pay child support. You better make sure I see my kids this weekend, or all hell’s gonna break loose, Jay.”

Jasmine huffed and called her attorney. Jasmine left a message for Laura letting her know she wanted this case in front of the judge’s bench ASAP. Hours later, Jasmine received a phone call from Laura.

“Laura,” she answered in a hasty voice. “I want this case in front the judge immediately. Jay did not show up with my kids. He thinks him and the heifer going to raise my children, and paint a bad image of me?” she cried.

“Jasmine calm down, please… Jay will not be going in front of the judge.”

  “Why not…?”

  “He is dead.”

There was a brief but tension-filled pause between them.

“Dead…?” she repeated with her voice cracking.

“Yes,” Laura responded. “I am sorry honey.”

“How?” she wailed in the phone. “How…?”

“Jhonelle and him were heading on their to get the kids for the visits when they swerved to avoid a car, their brakes failed and the car headed off the road and landed in the bush. Their car was wrapped around a tree.”

“Oh God…! My kids! My kids!” Jasmine screamed, sliding to the floor while crying her eyes out.

“Listen, we will be in court Monday and petition for the kids to go back to your care. Right now the agency is exploring to place the children with your mother.”

Jasmine didn’t answer. She placed the phone at her side. With her head hung, she wept.

In the courtroom, the judge listened while adjusting in his chair. Then he spoke.

“Given the extreme circumstances, I don’t believe in putting the children through anymore suffering, so I will be granting custody to the mother.”

After thanking the judge, Jasmine smiled and hugged her attorney. “I can’t wait to go see my children.”

Laura headed out the court with her. Pausing she stated, “Isn’t it weird how you wound up with your children back in your custody?”

“Yea, faith I guess.” Jasmine responded before walking down the halls to her car.

With the bright sun beating against her Jasmine smiled because she knew the truth. She paid someone to arrange the accident at the intersection. With the failure of his brakes, James had no chance to survive. My husband he had to go because, “Hell knows no fury like a woman scorned,” she smiled wryly.

  2 Birds in the Bush

  GENEIVA BORNE

“Welcome home daddy” Trina seductively said laying across the bed spreading her legs unveiling what her red laced teddy vainly attempted to conceal, but didn’t.

“How you want it daddy?” She asked, posing in the most seductive positions she could create in her kinky imagination.

Trina took pride in flexing. Dorel wanted her in the worst way, but didn’t want to run up in her and throw the usual straight-out-of-prison fuck on her. After being locked up for four long years he wanted to show her that he was a master. No one could do it better, that was hard sneaking in and out of closets at the medium security prison.

He hadn’t made love in a real bed in a long time. It was always in some closet or unattended office. He sneaked sex with a prison guard and had never made love without the pressure of being caught or rush quickie jobs. Now that he was home he wanted to make it special, for her. After all Trina was the mother of his child and the one he’d be sure to marry. Seeing her for the first time in her natural essence instead of prison guard blue uniform, left him stunned by her beauty.

“Damn Bird,” he affectionaltely whispered. “You look so good, I’m almost afraid of what I’m going to do to you”. He’d never loved anyone or been moved by anyone like her. This woman shut all his defenses down.

“Dorel come here, I want you to do all the things you dreamt of doing to me. Please daddy, make love to me.”

“Bird, I want to make love to you. It’s just that I’ve been away so long…”

“Shhh… hush!” Trina reassured him. “Less talk baby, and more loving daddy.”

Dorel felt like a high school kid. He wanted to please this woman so much that it made him feel insecure, a feeling he’d never entertained especially when it came to pleasing a woman.

“Don’t move while I’m in the bathroom. Your man will be right back. When I do, you’re going to get what you’ve been waiting for, for so long. Daddy loves you Bird.”

Dorel’s wink left Trina thinking it would be on and popping. She placed one finger in her mouth, sucking like it was a lollipop.

“Oh daddy, I can’t wait,” she purred like a starved sex kitten. “Don’t keep this pussy waiting too long, you hear?”

Dorel had never felt his dick so hard before. He stroked his dick, inch by inch thinking of the beautiful woman in the bed waiting. He thought about the time when she was a correctional officer at the prison. They’d snuck to secluded places and have ungodly sex. He didn’t want that, he needed to perform like he loved her for the woman she was, and for taking care of his child alone while he finished his prison sentence. He needed to show her that she was more than a sexual release for him but he loved her in every way.

He released all of his built up tension and was prepared to show her more than just a beat-down, he wanted her to feel love-making that created a special bond. He left the bathroom feeling his confidence building.

“I’m going to put this on her like she’s never had it before.”

His manhood had already risen again to it’s full glory. He opened the bathroom door with a confident swag.

“Bird, I don’t know if you can handle this baby. I hope you ready for what I have in store for you.”

He walked toward the bed and pulled the covers back hoping she hadn’t fallen asleep. Instead of Trina it was a blood soaked pillow, he tore the blanket off the bed to find only blood soaked sheets. Dorel dropped the blanket on the floor in horror. Looking around the room, Trina was nowhere to be found. He ran to the next room. The crib was empty and drenched in blood.

  “Bird, where are you?”

He called her by her nick named he’d given her in prison, because she was the only thing of beauty he had inside those cold concrete walls. She was known affectionately as his beautiful bird.

  “Bird…!”

Dorel woke up in a strange place. One thing he did know was this place wasn’t the prison cell he’d spent the last few years waking up in. He attempted to get out of bed to find out where he was and felt the restraints of iron cuffs holding him to the bed. Dorel felt a sharp pain in his side. He looked down to see what was causing the pain and saw the white guaze bandage covering his abdomen. He ripped the bandages off to see a red stain through the next layer of white bandges.

“Mr. Pippin, are you trying to pull your stitches out? You’ve lost enough blood already do you want another blood transfusion?”

Dorel heard the voice entering the room, and footsteps walking toward him checking his side.

I’m glad to see you’re awake but you have to be really careful not to disturb your wound. You’re very lucky to be alive it took doctors hours of surgery to save your life. Those stitches you have in your side from the wound are itching I’m sure,” the nurse said.

“How long have I been here?” Dorel asked, realizing he was in a hospital.

“Almost two weeks ago they brought you in here for stab wound injuries that punctured your kidney and caused excessive blood loss. You had to have a blood transfusion and have been here for eleven days.”

  “What happened to me?”

“You were stabbed within inches of your life, and suffered some blunt trauma. So far you’ve been unconscious, but recovering from your injuries pretty well. Other than the constant nightmares you seem to have, you appear to be doing okay. The doctor will be in to see you shortly if you need anything I mean anything at all just press the button on the wall and ask for Nurse Davis.”

The doctor who entered the room shortly after, told Dorel that he was recovering as well as could be expected but because of the transfusion and the threat of infection, he had to be kept for observation. The fact that he’d woken out of his state was a positive indication that his health was improving.

As Dorel’s thoughts drifted the memories came flowing. He strained to answer the questions picking at his brain. The last memory was being in the prison yard during reck-time and Hector rushing him with a shank. He’d never had beef with Hector. Why would Hector want to kill him? The mixture of high dosage pain killers and antibiotics was in full effect and made him drowsy and lethargic. Dorel struggled to keep his focus and dozed into a near comatose sleep state with no effort.

“Wake up Pipen, you no good shitface!” Dorel heard the voice growl at him.

Everything looked blury as he adjusted his eyes but his hearing was sharp. He knew that unmistakable voice of evil anywhere. Dorel could barely speak, but he muffled, “What the fuck you want Sweany?”
